Single Mother Creates Community of Support

A sense of community, the feeling of belonging, and being part of something greater than ourselves is a vital part of the human experience. Whether it’s in the midst of struggles or triumph, doing life without the support of others is HARD. People need other people! Single parents, with their busy schedules balancing work and kids on their own, often struggle to find the help they need or even the opportunity to cultivate friendships.

Earlier this year, Jennifer Frey, motivated by her own endeavors as a single mom, went on a mission to build a community of other moms who could just get what she was experiencing.

“It had been weighing on me for some time,” Jennifer reflected. “ There are so many single moms, and we don’t ask for help. Most of us are hard headed and we’re going to do it all ourselves.”

Jennifer created a Facebook group and scheduled a meet-up with other single moms in the area. The results were more than she expected. They organized another event the following month, and now another is in the works.

Camaraderie isn’t the only goal of the group, the ladies are committed to giving each other extra support where it’s needed the most. Whether it's fetching someone else’s kid from practice, giving a referral for babysitting services, or picking up medications when they are stuck at home with a sick kid, the ladies can count on another supermom to come to the rescue.

“Personally, I’ve built a lot of friendships,” said Jennifer. “My goal is that we’ll have some extra mothers out there helping to look after each other's kids and supporting each other as a shoulder to lean on.”

The next Single Mom’s Meetup is June 16. They plan to take a walk on the White House Greenway and have a picnic. Kids are welcome at all events! The group will start at the White House High School at 11 am. You can request to join their Facebook group here to learn more about the group and what events they are doing.

Disclaimer: Single Dad’s are not permitted at the meetups, no matter how cute or funny they are.
