Rescuing Horses, Restoring Lives: Hope and Healing at Steele Magnolia Sanctuary

In a world where struggles of daily life go unnoticed and silent battles of mental health and financial hardships plague so many, Cedar Hill’s Steele Magnolia Sanctuary is stepping up to make a profound difference in our community.

The Robertson County organization started as a mission to rescue abused and neglected horses. These animals are now being transformed into therapeutic support companions for individuals and families in need.

Steele Magnolia co-founder Julie Scarborough further explains the non-profit’s mission.

“In the process of rehabilitating the horses, I saw the therapeutic side of people understanding the benefits of being around horses, grooming them, loving on them, learning about them, and learning how to handle them with confidence and compassion,” says Julie. “My husband and I both agreed we had a passion not just for rescuing horses, but also felt God was leading us to be a sanctuary for hurting humans and families in our community. There are so many in this day and age.”

Steele Magnolia opens its doors to families struggling with financial hardship, veterans, children with special needs, and individuals dealing with various mental health challenges. The power of this sanctuary lies in the incredible bond formed between humans and horses, one that has the capacity to heal and transform lives.

“There’s something really special that happens when the participants learn about the broken past of each horse and see how they have been able to overcome it,” Julie adds.

What’s even better is Steele Magnolia’s commitment to offering these life-changing equine therapy programs completely free of charge, making hope and healing accessible to all.

For those currently enrolled in the program, the experience is nothing short of remarkable. The heartwarming stories emerging from the sanctuary are a testament to the incredible impact it has on the lives of those it serves.

“I remember the first time some of these kids walked through the gate looking extremely sad, depressed, and lacking self confidence,” Julie recalls. “Within minutes, they had huge smiles on their faces and now look forward to coming back week after week. The parents have commented on what a positive difference they’ve seen in their kids and love that they now feel like they have a sense of purpose.”

The transformative power of the sanctuary isn’t limited to the younger participants – adults benefit as well.

“A couple of veterans have both remarked on how peaceful they feel and how thankful they are for the time they have out here,” shares Julie. “My hope is that more and more people discover that our sanctuary is a place they can come to experience hope and healing, and that they see and feel the love of Jesus while they are here.”

Looking ahead, Steele Magnolia is eager to continue expanding its reach and impact, extending its healing embrace to even more individuals and families in need. They are asking for the community's support at their Family Fall Festival on Saturday, October 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This event, to be held at the sanctuary on 3441 Kinneys Road in Cedar Hill, will feature live music, fall coffee drinks, homemade ice cream, food trucks, a mini petting zoo, horse and hay rides, and much more. It’s a perfect opportunity for people to not only enjoy a day of fun and exploration, but also contribute to a cause that brings light to those in need.

In a world where adversity often takes center stage, Steele Magnolia Sanctuary proves the resilience of the human spirit and the healing power of animals. Their program is more than just a sanctuary – it’s a lifeline, offering hope, transformation, and an unwavering belief in the potential for healing and growth.
