Navigating Tennessee's Roads Safely in the Rain and Snow

Growing up in Tennessee and spending a lot of time in and around cars, I can say with certainty that driving in the winter can be unpredictable and sometimes scary.

At Payne Chevrolet, we want to extend a warm reminder to all Tennesseans about the importance of safe driving in both the rain and snow. Challenging weather conditions affect even the road’s most seasoned driver, so it’s important to know a few tips and tricks before heading out on a slick day.

Rainy Days

Reduce Speed: Wet roads can be slippery, so slowing down is key to maintaining control.

Increase Following Distance: Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you to allow for better visibility and reaction time.

Use Headlights: Even during daylight hours, turn on your headlights to enhance visibility for yourself and others.

Snowy Conditions

Stay Informed: Check weather forecasts and road conditions before heading out.

Drive Slowly: Snow-covered roads require reduced speeds for safer navigation.

Brake Gently: Apply brakes slowly to avoid skidding. If you start to skid, steer in the direction you want to go.

Watch out for Black Ice: If the temperature is below freezing, assume that anything on the road that looks like water is ice. Try not to accelerate or brake hard in slick areas to avoid losing control or traction on the road.

If You Get Stuck

Despite taking precautions, getting stuck in a ditch can happen. If you find yourself in such a situation, remember that Payne Chevrolet is here to assist you. Simply give us a call, and our reliable towing service will be on its way to help you get back on the road safely.
