Mental Health Matters

This is why mental health matters to me.

I am a Nurse Practitioner who currently practices in Family Medicine (FNP). Family medicine providers can play a significant role in the treatment and management of mental health issues, particularly for mild to moderate conditions.

They are often well-equipped to address mental health concerns in a primary care setting. I found that during the Covid pandemic, mental health complaints with patients increased significantly. Some were because of the isolation at the time, but the uncertainty of the virus itself and the loss of loved ones were the main originators. Mental health care is not always a long-term treatment; it is also a situational treatment.

While trying to refer some patients for more specialized care, I found that mental health providers were not taking new patients due to the influx of the needed specialized care. I then lost a couple of dearly loved patients due to the virus, and saw the aftermath that it caused. After this, I experienced the same while losing my husband in the same manner. I felt the loss and the need for mental health services within my own family and felt the obligation to my patients and community to go back to obtain my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree so I could provide that care locally.

Mental health matters for a variety of reasons, and its significance cannot be overstated. Here are several key reasons why mental health is crucial:

1. Overall Well-being: Mental health is an integral component of overall well-being. When your mental health is in good shape, you are better equipped to handle life's challenges, experience joy, and maintain a positive outlook on life.

2. Physical Health: Mental health and physical health are closely interconnected. Poor mental health can have adverse effects on the body, leading to conditions like heart disease, obesity, and a weakened immune system. Conversely, good mental health can promote a healthier body.

3. Productivity: Mental health plays a significant role in one's ability to be productive, both in personal and professional life. When mental health is compromised, it can result in decreased concentration, energy, and motivation.

4. Relationships: Healthy relationships are often dependent on good mental health. People with better mental health can communicate effectively, form and maintain strong connections, and resolve conflicts in a constructive manner.

5. Emotional Resilience: Good mental health enhances your capacity to cope with life's ups and downs. It helps you bounce back from adversity, stress, and trauma, and build emotional resilience.

6. Quality of Life: Mental health contributes to one's overall quality of life. When you're mentally well, you can enjoy life more fully, engage in activities that bring you satisfaction, and pursue your goals and dreams.

7. Economic Impact: Mental health has a significant economic impact on society. When mental health issues go unaddressed, they can result in lost productivity, absenteeism, and increased healthcare costs.

8. Social Well-being: A society's overall mental health has a substantial impact on its social fabric. Communities with better mental health tend to be more supportive, cohesive, and resilient.

9. Prevention: Focusing on mental health can help prevent the development of more severe mental health disorders. Early intervention and access to mental health services can be crucial in preventing issues from becoming more chronic.

10. Reducing Stigma: Recognizing the importance of mental health can help reduce the stigma associated with seeking help for mental health issues. It encourages open conversations about mental health and promotes a more supportive and understanding society.

11. Personal Fulfillment: Good mental health allows individuals to find personal fulfillment and satisfaction in their lives. It enables them to pursue their passions, set and achieve goals, and live a meaningful and purposeful life.

Mental health is a fundamental aspect of human well-being that affects all areas of life. Prioritizing mental health, seeking help when needed, and promoting a culture of understanding and support can lead to healthier individuals, stronger communities, and a more prosperous society as a whole.
