There are people who see problems as obstacles and people who see problems as opportunities. Jeff Christian of Gallatin sees opportunities.
Eight years ago, during a yard sale, Jeff noticed how it would be easier to get supplies out of a trash can if the sides were removable. “Then we could distribute the stuff the way we wanted, instead of dumping it all,” he recalls.
A solution sparked, Jeff started testing out other garbage can models. “We wanted to solve 6 problems, so we developed 6 solutions:. a trash can that’s almost impossible to tip over, really easy to clean, sends 25% less plastic to the landfill, saves money on plastic bags, has no vacuum effect, and you can see if your bag has leaked before you take it out.” (See our video below for a quick demonstration.)
Navigating operations for his other businesses, Jeff began sculpting his garbage can concept in his spare time. The process took longer than he wanted, mainly because he wasn’t willing to compromise. “It took me an extra year simply because I wasn’t willing to go overseas to manufacture the parts,” says Jeff.
Passion and persistence had already supported him as he and his wife, Carol, built three other businesses–The Roof Store, The Barn Store, and Tents & Events Tennessee. Those traits, tested with the manufacturing process in particular, would serve him well as he added the title of Inventor to his resume. Finally, a company embraced Jeff’s vision for an American-made product, and the Toocan hit the assembly line.
The current Toocan model is a plastic product available in 3 colors: white, grey, and black. Jeff says that a stainless steel model is slated to launch in the fall, with an under-the-counter 10-gallon model coming next.
The Toocan holds 4 operating patents currently, with another 4 on the horizon. “They aren’t simply design patents,” says Jeff, “They are utility patents.” They protect the functionality of the product’s elements. In other words, these patents and this can are more valuable. Priced at $59, they are comparable to other 13-pound garbage cans with a life expectancy of 7-8 years.
The unique design blends in with kitchen decor, making them stylish and functional. It’s a garbage can that boasts, “No drips. No rips. No tips. Less trips.” – a seemingly simple device making a daily task easier. “We can’t make you excited about buying a trash can,” says Jeff, “But I bet next time you take the trash out and that bag rips and you leave a trail of wet spillage across your floor, you’ll think of the Toocan.” That’s a bet worth taking.
