Kate's Life-Changing Cider Project

For Kate Hancock, an 11-year-old Robertson County resident, giving was on her heart this Christmas season. This special young lady has spent the last two Christmas seasons raising thousands of dollars to support children through Emmanuel Haiti, a ministry associated with Mt Carmel Baptist Church, which has spent the last 10 years seeking to serve orphaned and abandoned children in the Jeremie, Haiti region.

This past year, Kate once again shared her heart for raising funds to help children in Haiti. Inspired by all God accomplished through her simple step of faith in 2023, she set a bold goal—to raise enough money to send 100 children to school for an entire year (a cost of $250 per child). Mary Phil Illges, director of Emmanuel Haiti shared. “Like last year, the adults worried that her goal was too high.”

Building on the momentum from the previous year, Kate set up her cider stand at her family’s market, Hancock Family Farms, in December. Within just a few hours, every cup of cider was sold.

Out of cider and still short of her goal, Kate and her family sprang into action—both through prayer and practical efforts. They soon learned that Kate's goal would be met, unexpectedly, without the need to sell any more cider. An anonymous donor stepped in, offering to match every donation given by those under 17.

Through her efforts and the generosity of the anonymous donor, Kate not only surpassed her initial goal of sponsoring 100 children—she helped accomplish far more than anyone could have imagined.

“In the end, Kate had not only raised enough to send all 100 kids to school, she was also able to purchase mattresses for kids at the orphanage, support five pastors for a year and build three more churches. Only God!” Illges shared with eagerness.

Kate’s compassionate heart and desire to see the Gospel transform communities in Haiti has left a lasting impact on many throughout Robertson County. This year, during the Emmanuel Haiti 10th Anniversary Celebration at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, she was honored for her commitment to Christ, his mission, and her dedication to serving others in need.

Driven by a heart to serve those in need, Kate shared, “I just wanted to give something to those who have little. I hope to inspire others to think beyond themselves, especially during the Christmas season, and remember that it’s about more than just us.”
