SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. – The City of Springfield eagerly announces the latest addition to the Springfield Greenway at the Memorial Boulevard overpass: a new art installation. Presently, efforts are in progress to install a culturally significant mural crafted by Tennessee artist Tracee Badway.
The colorful mural design incorporates state symbols, agricultural components, landscape, points of interest in the city, and our city’s date of incorporation.
Prior to installation of the mural, Boy Scout Troops 144 and 76 joined forces to conduct a cleanup of the area. Cleanup efforts included graffiti removal from the sidewalk plus removal of trash and debris from the area where the mural is being installed. Following the Boy Scouts cleanup, local company Swinea Painting Services donated their services to prepare the surface and apply the base coat of paint to the concrete column and wall portions of the overpass, a surface area of approximately 3,918 square feet.
In total, this beautification project will cost $28,000 and is made possible in part by a Tennessee Arts Commission Rural Arts Project Support (RAPS) grant in the amount of $11,300 and a Tennessee Department of Tourist Development Marketing Grant in the amount of $8,350.
“We are grateful to the Tennessee Arts Commission and the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development for their support of this beautification project,” said Springfield Tourism Coordinator, Ace Timmermeier. “The Springfield Greenway is a hotspot for outdoor enthusiasts. Installing a curated piece of art in this location creates a more welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.”
The community is invited to leave their mark on Springfield! Mural artist Tracee Badway will lead a community paint day Sunday, April 21, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Parking is available at American Legion Park. Participants can follow the Springfield Greenway to the mural location under the bridge. Volunteers will sign a volunteer waiver prior to participation.
