When a group of men, most of them strangers, came together eight weeks ago for a bible study group, they had no idea what big things were in store. The study focused on the importance of learning to lean on God and community rather than trying to carry burdens alone.
During one of their meetings, James Caruthers, the youngest member of the group, shared his dream to start his own lawn care business. The problem he was facing was that he didn’t have the right equipment to do so— only owning a weed eater and push mower. Although he had been saving up money to purchase a riding lawn mower, he was short on cash.
As soon as James said this, Derek knew what had to be done. A friend of his, outside of their group, had two lawnmowers for sale and agreed to lower the price of one of them once he learned of its destination.
Then Derek got the rest of the guys, Daniel Evans, Caleb Grey, Ryan Hannon, Jonathan Allison, Tony Lansden, and Greg German, on board. “I sent a message out to the whole group, and within a few hours I had all the money to buy the mower,” laughed Derek. “$350 is a lot of money, but when it’s split between seven guys, it’s only $50 a piece.”
The mower was delivered last week to a very surprised James. “He kept saying, ‘Man, I don’t deserve this,’” Derek said. “But he does, though.”
James wasn’t looking for a hand out when he confided in his group mates, so this ultimate gesture was so much sweeter than he could have ever imagined.
“A lot of men have the mentality that we have to solve all the problems on our own,” said Derek. “Helping each other out, that’s how it should be.”
Thanks to a small group of men, there’s now a new lawn care business in town ready to take on new clients: Caruthers Cuts. You can contact James Carothers at (615) 830-1153 to learn more information and to get on his schedule.
