“God-Inspired” Painting by Local Artist to be Auctioned Off for Tornado Relief

There are many ways people have been showing support for those impacted by this past Saturday’s devastating tornadoes, be it monetarily, volunteering to help with cleanup efforts, or donating supplies, food, clothing and shelter.

Lisa Dinkins is one such area resident intent on aiding the cause. And she’s doing it the way she knows best – through the gift of art.

Just one day after the destruction, Lisa created “Tornado Trumpet,” a colorful acrylic painting she crafted in her place of worship, The Well of Nashville in Goodlettsville. The 24x30-inch framed piece is on display through December 20 at Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center in Hendersonville and is being auctioned off to the highest bidder.

All proceeds from the sale of “Tornado Trumpet,” valued at $900, will go to United Way Disaster Relief. "It's such a tough time of year for devastation. However we can spread the love helps," says Lisa.

Lisa, who’s been an artist for 30 years and owns local small business Shut Up ‘N’ Paint, says the church provided the perfect setting to fill her canvas with imagery that was “God-inspired.”

“I wasn’t sure what I would paint when I got there,” admits Lisa. “As our praise and worship team began singing, I just waited until something came to mind. I started painting the top of a tornado and swirling it … as I was creating the twister, our worship pastor, Leann Albrecht, started singing about how our focus right now was on releasing sounds of praise. That’s when I saw the trumpet and took the painting in that direction.”

She continues, “It excited me. It was one of those surprises God gives you when you don’t know how something is going to turn out. Trusting in Him, I was willing to take that step into the unknown. It turned out to be a beautiful blessing.”

In less than an hour’s time, Lisa had completed a work of art dedicated to depicting a joyous sound. A revival. A rebirth.

“Psalm 150 is the scripture God showed me as I was painting,” she says. “It talks about praising God with trumpets playing, the harp, the cymbals. It doesn't mean we don't acknowledge the pain, the grief and the devastation. In those times, God shows up as only He can to lift you out of that dark place.”

And art, Lisa adds, has a way of tapping into human emotion in a “most beautiful way.”

“It can bring up feelings you didn’t even know you had,” she explains.

To view “Tornado Trumpet,” visit the Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center, located at 1017 Antebellum Circle in Hendersonville, through December 20. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. It is closed on Monday.
