Fun May Holidays and How to Celebrate

Did you know the United States recognizes twelve federal holidays each year? You can probably name most of them without much thought because they are widely known and celebrated by most Americans.

However, these federal holidays are not the only holidays being celebrated. As of recently, there has been a trend in the United States to celebrate what is known as “National Days,” and according to NationalDayCalendar.com, there are over 1,500 National Days in existence. That’s a lot of celebrating!

Here are some of the National Days that are celebrated throughout the rest of the month of May and how you can celebrate them locally.

May 10th: National School Nurse Day

Celebrate your local school’s nurse by bringing them a gift card, home baked treat, or favorite drink. Bonus points if you write a handwritten thank you card!

May 11th: National Eat What You Want Day

Dine in at one of your local favorite restaurants and order anything your heart desires. Calories don’t count! We suggest trying out one of the following places: White House Pizza and Pub, Moli Pazzo in White House, Depot Bar and Grill in Springfield, Thomas Drugs in Cross Plains, or Top of the Ridge Restaurant in Portland.

May 12th: National Child Care Provider Appreciation Day

Who better deserves to be celebrated than your children’s day care staff, teachers, doctors, therapists, and dentists? Make them feel appreciated by bringing them flowers and a hand drawn picture from your little one, or perhaps drop off a gift card to a local restaurant.

May 13th: National Miniature Golf Day

Play a game of putt putt with your family and friends at one of these local places: Cedar Creek Sports Center, Grand Old Golf, The City Forum, Music City Mini Golf, or Putt Putt Fun Center.

May 14th: Mother’s Day

Make your mother or wife feel extra special today by letting her sleep in, cooking a meal for her, and telling her how much you and the family appreciate all she does. Gift ideas: wine, chocolate, a massage, alone time.

May 15th: National Chocolate Chip Day

Got a sweet tooth for chocolate? Swing by one of the Golly G’s in Greenbrier and Pleasant View or one of the Deja Moo locations in White House and Springfield to get some chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream or a chocolate chip cookie.

May 16th: National Do Something Good For Your Neighbor Day

Here’s a few free ideas to treat your neighbor: mow their grass, bring them some freshly baked cookies, offer to pick up a few groceries for them, or invite them over for cocktails after dinner.

May 17th: National Graduation Tassel Day

Know a graduating senior this year? Post on social media how proud you are of them!

May 18th: International Museum Day

Celebrate this international holiday by visiting the Robertson County Museum. They are open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and have exhibits focusing on local history.

May 19th: National Bike To Work Day

If you live too far from your workplace, you can always hit up a cycling class at the one of the YMCA locations in Hendersonville and Springfield or check out Cycle Bar in Hendersonville. In need of a bike? Stop by Cyclin’ America in White House.

May 20th: National Rescue Dog Day

If you are looking to add another four legged member to your family, consider adopting a dog from Gigi’s Pet Rescue in Nashville, The Humane Society of Sumner County, or Keely’s Friends Dog Rescue in Goodlettsville.

May 21st: International Tea Day

Visit one of the International Tea & Coffee Company locations in White House, Portland, or Nashville. They have a plentitude of tea options as well as delicious snacks and lunch food.

May 22nd: National Craft Distillery Day

Sample some craft beer in Springfield at BS Brew Works. They have over ten crafted beers on tap and more on deck. Their menu rotates each season.

May 23rd: National Lucky Penny Day

If you find a penny on the ground today, it is known to be extra lucky. Get your children and families involved by laying down pennies on their heads side up for others to find.

May 24th: Brother’s Day

Today is the perfect opportunity to let your brother or brother-in-law know just how much you love and appreciate him. Treat him to a round of golf at Country Hills Golf club in Hendersonville, Twelve Stones Golf Club in Goodlettsville, or The Legacy Golf Club in Springfield.

May 25th: National Tap Dance Day

Get to tappin’ whenever or wherever you feel to celebrate National Tap Dance Day. Want to learn how? Sign up for classes at Dance South Performing Arts in White House, Nine One Eight Performing Arts Studio in White House, Studio 1:16 in Gallatin, or The Dancers Academy in Goodlettsville.

May 26th: National Don’t Fry Day

Grab some fresh produce from Smiley’s Produce Market in Greenbrier and grill it, saute it, or steam it for dinner.

May 27th: National Grape Popsicle Day

Grab some premade grape popsicles or make your own to enjoy with friends and family on this hot and humid day.

May 28th: National Hamburger Day

There’s no shortage of hamburger places around us— and all so delicious! Try one of these few: MOOYAH Burgers, Fries, & Shakes in Gallatin, EJ’s in White House, or the Dixie Maid Cafe in Springfield.

May 29th: Memorial Day

Check out your city’s website to see which events they are hosting this day or find your own way to celebrate by grilling out, taking a boat out on the lake, or visiting with family.

May 30th: National Water A Flower Day

Visit Peace Garden in Hendersonville, Long Hollow Gardens in Hendersonville, or Gardens Apothecary Co. in Springfield to see some beautiful flowers and plants. You definitely will want to ask before watering their flowers, but feel free to smell them!

May 31st: National Senior Health & Fitness Day

Take your senior citizen family members and friends out today for some much needed exercise. Don’t know anyone? Call up one of these nursing homes and see if they could use any volunteers to hang with their citizens there: White House Healthcare, New Hope Senior Living of Hendersonville, Brookdale Gallatin, or Richland Place Senior Living of Portland.
