Expert Advice: How To Begin Your Fitness Journey

A starting point. It can be the most daunting objective for anyone wanting to begin a fitness journey. Believe it or not, this is the easiest decision you will make throughout the process because you already have the answer.

The starting point of any fitness journey is the creation of a goal. What is your “why?” If you have decided that you want to get involved in fitness, then chances are you already know why. For many, this could be looking a certain way, seeing a certain number on the scale, lifting a certain amount of weight, lowering blood pressure, getting off medication, or maybe you just want to be able to play with your kids or grandkids.

The next step is to find someone knowledgeable on the topic of fitness who can help you develop your exercise plan to meet your needs. This can be an expert such as a personal trainer, dietician, a buddy that has been into fitness for the last decade, or it can even be your favorite fitness influencer on social media. Don’t try to figure it all out on your own. There are plenty of people out there who are willing and able to help! Also, keep in mind, there are all kinds of fitness-oriented groups like martial arts, pick-up basketball, cycling groups, yoga classes, hiking groups, and more.

Now that you have a goal and a plan, be ready to persevere when it gets tough. You will want to quit, or cheat on your diet, or take more than a few days off because you’re sore. It happens to all of us. This is why you need to surround yourself with like-minded individuals who will keep you accountable. Your accountability partner doesn’t have to be your workout partner or trainer. This role can be filled by anyone who knows your goals and won’t let you give up on them because they care about you.

Lastly, remember that there are all kinds of days during your fitness journey, and I’m not talking about chest day or leg day. I am talking about happy days, sad days, hard days, humbling days, easy days, fun days, and miserable days. The thing to remember is that once you add all of those days up, you will be looking at your goal in the mirror. So what are you waiting for? Get started on your fitness journey today.
