Discover Middle Tennessee: The Best Road Trips to Take This Summer

Middle Tennessee is a treasure trove of scenic drives, charming small towns, and rich history, making it an ideal destination for road trip enthusiasts. Whether you're in a brand new vehicle from our dealership (the Tahoe would be my vehicle of choice) or driving your trusty old car, here are some of the best road trips you can embark on to explore this beautiful region.

1. Natchez Trace Parkway

Stretching 444 miles from Nashville to Natchez, Mississippi, the Natchez Trace Parkway is a historical route that offers breathtaking scenery and numerous points of interest. This all-American road is perfect for a leisurely drive, with opportunities to stop at historical markers, hiking trails, and picturesque picnic spots. The Double Arch Bridge at milepost 438 is a must-see, offering stunning views and a perfect photo op.

2. Burgess Falls State Park

If you love hiking and waterfalls, you don’t want to miss heading down to Burgess Falls in Sparta. Head down on I-40 East, towards Sparta, or take your time getting on the interstate by using State Highway 25 instead. Burgess Falls is an easy day trip, featuring four awesome waterfalls, hiking trails, and picnic areas. The park is open from 8 am to 30 minutes before sunset. If you want to stay the night, you have your choice between cabins or camping. This road trip is one I personally love adding to a summer weekend.

3. Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain

Head southeast on I-24 to Chattanooga, a vibrant city with a plethora of attractions. The drive offers a mix of urban and rural landscapes, with the scenic Cumberland Plateau along the way. In Chattanooga, visit the Tennessee Aquarium, the Creative Discovery Museum, and take a stroll along the beautiful Riverwalk. Don’t miss Lookout Mountain, where you can explore Rock City, Ruby Falls, and the Incline Railway for panoramic views of the surrounding area. (The view from nearby Snooper’s Rock is featured in the cover photo—check out that scenery!)

4. Leiper’s Fork and the Natchez Trace

For a shorter but equally delightful trip, venture to Leiper’s Fork, a charming village just a short drive from Franklin. Take the scenic Natchez Trace Parkway to reach this artsy community known for its quaint shops, galleries, and eateries. It’s the perfect way to relax and enjoy the local flavors.

5. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Although a bit farther, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is worth the drive. Take I-40 East to reach this stunning natural wonder, which straddles the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. The park offers incredible scenic drives, like the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, and numerous hiking trails with breathtaking views, waterfalls, and wildlife.

These road trips are just a taste of what Middle Tennessee has to offer. No matter which direction you choose, you’re bound to find beautiful landscapes, rich history, and plenty of southern charm. So, fill up your tank, grab your keys, and hit the road for an unforgettable adventure. Safe travels!
