Children Are People: Empowering Gallatin's Youth for a Brighter Future

For over two decades, Children Are People (CAP), a youth non-profit organization in Gallatin, TN, has been dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment for children to thrive academically and personally. With a recent expansion, CAP has bolstered its ability to support even more students within the community.

CAP’s mission is to unlock the potential of local at-risk youth and remove the barriers to their success. They mentor and tutor students (K-12) through their afterschool and summer programs. CAP has the flexibility to tailor programs according to the individual needs and interests of its students.

“If a student is interested in law or law enforcement or any career path, we will reach out into the community and find a mentor for that student to shadow and learn,” said CAP Executive Director, Susan Superczynski.

“We will also have community members come to CAP and speak to our students about their careers and the path they took to achieve their personal successes. If a CAP student is falling behind in his or her academic work, we will find a tutor who can help him or her strengthen the necessary skills,” she continued.

After 22 years of operations, CAP has had quite a few success stories.

One, in particular, is the story of Dr. Nyadow Chol. She started CAP in the seventh grade, and at the time, she was unsure what the future held for her. Mr. Fred Bailey, the Founder of CAP and the Executive Director at the time, spoke with Nyadow and discovered her interest in the medical field. It was then that Mr. Bailey added her to CAP’s medical interest class provided by a retired nurse, and Nyadow loved it.

Fast forward to now, Nyadow is officially a medical doctor and currently completing her residency in family medicine in Chicago, IL.

The backbone of CAP's operations consists of its passionate team. In addition to Susan Superczynski the Executive Director, Angela Taylor assists as Director of Operations. The two lead the organization with unwavering commitment.

Additionally, volunteers play a crucial role in CAP's success, as they provide one-on-one attention to students, assist with homework, engage in reading sessions, and build meaningful relationships.

“We have an incredibly amazing group of staff and volunteers who inspire me daily with their dedication to our kiddos,” said Susan.

Recently, the organization underwent a remarkable expansion, moving to a new and improved facility. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new space took place on June 22 at 805 Teal Drive in Gallatin.

With this expansion, CAP can now accommodate up to 100 students, providing an even greater impact on the community.
