Retirement doesn’t mean slowing down in Gallatin—it means stepping up. That’s the heart behind the Leadership Gallatin Golden Years program. Golden Years is an initiative born of the flagship Leadership Gallatin program, developed by the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce, that invites retirees and near-retirees to explore the community, give back, and connect with local leaders and non-profits in the community.
Now celebrating the graduation of its first class, Leadership Gallatin Golden Years continues to thrive. Designed specifically for adults who are in or nearing retirement, the program introduces participants to Gallatin’s nonprofit landscape, city services, and community resources—while encouraging them to invest their time, treasure, and talents in meaningful ways.
The next class kicks off this fall, with a Morning Mixer Meet & Greet on Tuesday, September 2nd, followed by six themed day trips every Tuesday from September 9th through October 14th, running roughly from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Participants are expected to commit to each day of the program.
Each session offers hands-on experiences, behind-the-scenes tours, and conversations with local leaders. Themes include Financial Stability, Health, Education and Youth Opportunities, Rebuilding Lives, and Exploring Gallatin. The program wraps up with a celebratory Signing Day.
“Everyone in town has been so supportive,” says Ashley Freeman, Program Coordinator. “These participants aren’t ready to sit back and tend the garden. They’re go-getters, eager to learn, connect, and serve.”
The fall program costs $300 per person, which covers transportation, meals, snacks, and all activities. Applications are open now through August 8th.
Past participants reflect the diversity of experiences and passions Leadership Golden attracts. From a woman who retired on day two of the program to an adventurous 80-something-year-old world traveler, no two stories are the same—but all share a renewed connection to Gallatin.
One standout alum is Karen Hardin, a transplant from Chicago with a heart for fundraising. “My neighbors started asking me every week where I was going next,” she laughed. Karen came into the program curious and left with a clear vision of how she wanted to give back. “She told me, ‘Now I know where I’m meant to help,’” says Ashley.
Leadership Gallatin Golden Years is built around the pillars of United Way, with strong ties to United Way of Sumner County. Most of the organizations featured during the program are United Way partners and Chamber members, providing participants with meaningful introductions to Gallatin’s nonprofit landscape.
Ashley emphasizes that anyone interested should apply, regardless of how long they’ve lived in the area. “You don’t have to be from here, and you don’t have to meet every checkbox. We’re looking for different personalities and life experiences. If you’re close to retirement and want to invest in your community, we want you.”
Applications are available now through the Chamber. For more information, visit the Gallatin Chamber of Commerce website or click here.
